Weight Loss vs Fat Loss: It’s NOT The Same Thing!
“Losing weight” is too vague, too unspecific. When a person sets out to lose weight, just what are they trying to lose? Bone density? Muscle mass? Organ weight? Of course not – they’re generally looking to lose FAT. Simply put, you want to lose fat, not muscle. The only problem is that the popular methods for shedding weight often result in excessive muscle loss, too. The weight you lose and calories you burn may or may not be fat. Sure, if you eat like a bird and run for miles you’ll lose weight, but you won’t change your shape. If you are a pear shape, you will simply become a smaller pear shape; and a mushier one too (loss of muscle means loss of tone).
But you don’t want that (do you?). You want a strong, lean body. You want to maintain your agility, your power, your strength, and your healthy appearance. You want to burn fat while maintaining (or even building upon) your existing muscle. Muscle craves protein and fat to run effectively. Next to the organs and the brain, your muscle mass is one of the biggest consumers of energy in the body, and the more you have, the better your fat loss.
What to expect when reducing your body fat %
A scale tells you how much you gross weight you carry, but it can't tell you what type of
tissue comprises that weight. Even if you have a healthy weight, your body fat levels
might pose a health risk.
Far too often – at least in my experience, and this may or may not pertain to you – people get overly caught up on what the scale tells them. Weight loss can be completely subjective, and the truth of matter is the scale really doesn’t tell you anything.
In all three scenarios you weigh less, but does that really mean you made any significant progress?
Answer: Um, no.
Sure, you weigh less……….but all you’ve really accomplished is to make yourself a smaller, weaker, armless, version of your original self. There’s no shape, form, or contour to the body. What’s more: now you have to do everything with your left arm. And that just sucks!
One lb of muscle weighs the EXACT same as one lb of fat – well, DUH!! – the difference, however, is that muscle is more dense than fat and takes up less space.
Do not let the number on the scale define you!
Focus on building your agility, your confidence, your strength, and your healthy appearance!
